America the Beautiful

I have always been deeply touched by this lovely song and the way it so eloquently ties America’s high ideals of brotherhood with its stunning natural beauty. It was created in 1910 by combining Katharine Lee Bates’ poem, “America”, with a pre-existing melody written by church organist Samuel E. Ward.   From Red's award-winning Favorite Sing Along Songs CD.

Themes: Patriotism, brotherhood

America the Beautiful

Oh, beautiful for spacious skies
For amber waves of grain
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain
America, America God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea

Words composed by Kathy Lee Bates.

Music Composed by Samuel L. Ward
