When I Get a Feeling

This clever song from Red's Parents' Choice "Gold" Award-winning CD, "Hello World" helps children make friends with their feelings and develop emotional intelligence.

Activity by Pamela Brown

Adapted by Red Note Records

Materials Needed:

The song, When I Get a Feeling from Red Grammer's recording, Hello World!

The book, Frog and Toad Are Friends by Arnold Lobel

Magazines, paste, scissors and poster board

Procedure:

Play the song, When I Get a Feeling and ask the students to listen carefully to the lyrics that Red Grammer is singing. Ask the students how they might feel if a specific event happened to them. Have them identify the emotion they would feel. Read Frog and Toad Are Friendsby Arnold Lobel. Help students identify the emotions the characters are feeling. Give the students some magazines and catalogs. Explain that they are to pick out one emotion and try to find pictures of people feeling emotions. They will cut and paste the pictures to a large poster board. Later, other students will try to guess what emotions they are describing. This activity would be a jumping off point to a yearlong discussion of feelings and emotions, including the importance of accepting the differences in each other. Play When I Get a Feeling while students are cutting and pasting.  Later, Play the song again and have the students sing along.
